The traveler must understand the next step at a glance.

Travel information is valuable when it is related to the route and moment of the traveler’s decision. Freshness of data, arrangement of information and clear message of service change are the basis of designing this experience.

Why is this application important?

Passengers do not have the same needs at the airport entrance, subway platform, bus station and intercity terminal. One seeks the destination and time, and the other needs to understand the boarding place or the reason for the change of route. Digital signage allows the information of each point to be adjusted based on these decisions.

A beautiful display is not enough for this scenario. The source of the data, the time of the last update and the behavior of the content when the data becomes invalid should be clear in the design. The old data, which looks like the current situation, can create more ambiguity due to the lack of information.

From idea to usable implementation

Show the identity of the trip before the details

Present the trip number or ID, destination, time and location in a consistent order. Match terminology to official signs and announcements in each environment. For multilingual audiences, reserve the priority and space for each language in the template from the start.

Explain the service change with its effect on the passenger

The change message should specify which route or journey is affected, when it is valid and what action the passenger should take. A general phrase such as “change of plan” without a destination or direction to proceed will not help the decision. Attach additional information to the clear answer point.

Consider the freshness and status of the source as part of the content

Define the data refresh interval and stale-data threshold for each source and scenario. During an outage or data disruption, an understandable status message with a reference to the official source is better than leaving an old value that appears current. Test this behavior with sample data before launch.

Scenario: Changing the boarding place at the terminal

User reference confirms related trips and new location. The input display provides general information and the boarding range display guides the same trips. The change message has a validity period and is replaced by the current program after the temporary condition is over.

How to evaluate the result?

Record the information discrepancy with the reference, old data, and how long the temporary message remains. Ask the audience to identify the destination and the next step from the sample format. The usability index should focus on the accuracy, freshness and understanding of the message; The number of screens alone does not indicate the quality of information.

This scenario in SignagePlus

SignagePlus has dedicated information solutions for airport, subway, city bus and intercity terminal scenarios. In the design of the project, the authorized data source, the required interface and the disconnection behavior for the same infrastructure are considered.

Common questions

Is one template enough for all stations?

Common structure is useful, but the information must be aligned with the audience’s decision at each point. The entrance, the waiting platform and the inside of the vehicle have different roles.

What should be displayed in the disconnection of the information source?

Define the alternative behavior with the user: a clear message about the status of the information and the way to refer to the official authority. Expired data should not be left unmarked as the current state.
